GUIDELINES

Please read these guidelines carefully. When you drop your work off for firing it is understood that you have read and agreed to these guidelines.

  • Please try your best to deliver dry work. However, if that is not possible, then we will accept wet work, It will just take longer to dry and fire.

  • For glaze firings, please make sure that you have completely cleaned the bottoms of your pots. There should not be a drop of glaze on the bottom, and the glaze line should preferably be at least 5mm from the base. Otherwise there is a high likelihood that the glaze will run and the pot will stick to the kiln shelves. This will mean a destroyed pot, and incur you costs to you to repair the damaged shelf.

  • If it looks like there is an overly thick application of glaze or layered glazes, we may not fire your piece.

  • You may be required to provide kiln cookies (or setters). These are pads of clay (made of a white stoneware clay and slightly bigger than the base of the work) which protect the kiln shelf from glaze runs and contamination. We do have some, but it may help us if you provide them for your pieces if your work has any of the following:

    • a runny glaze on it,

    • black or blue underglaze/oxide covering the base,

    • cobalt pencil or oxide as your makers mark,

    • been made from iron rich clay like Buff Raku Trachyte (BRT) etc.

  • No large solid work will be accepted unless you can reassure us that it has been hollowed out.

  • Hollow work should have a small noticeable hole.

  • Please let us know if your work contains material other than clay – metal, paper, fabric, sponge, synthetics, etc. Some things are not suitable to be fired in a kiln and can cause damage to kiln infrastructure.

  • Pack your work carefully! We will mimmise the amount of handling our side will include:

    • unpacking

    • loading and unloading the kiln

    • weighing

    • repacking

  • If we notice that any items are broken as they are unpacked you will notified. We are very careful but it is your responsibility to ensure they make it to us intact.

  • We will not accept work which has been stuffed with paper or cardboard. This should be removed prior to drop off.

  • Please collect your work within one month of notification. Work not collected will be kept for one month. After that it becomes the property of OoPs - One-off Pottery Studio and will be repurposed or disposed of.

OTHER POTENTIAL COSTS:

  • Damaged kiln shelves - $15 to $50 to rectify

  • Ruined kiln shelves - up to $100 replacement fee

  • Damage to kiln infrastructure - $100

  • Clay melt downs will have a charge of - $100

  • Please call us if you are planning to fire many small items, like beads and children's pieces These may attract an additional cost as they are light, small, very time consuming and tricky to load.

  • If your pieces affect someone else's during firing (like glaze flashing), you might need to cover their firing too.

Firing Pottery is a tricky, unpredictable (but exciting) affair!

DISCLAIMER

Please bear in mind that ceramics and kilns can be a bit unpredictable and surprising at times! But that is what is exciting and fun about ceramics. There will always some risk when you send your pieces to us. But don’t worry, we will treat your creations like our own! We’ll handle and fire your work with lots of care, but One-off Pottery Studio isn’t responsible for any breakages or glaze mishaps.

If the kiln has fired correctly and the faults are due to issues in your making process (like S-cracks, fine hair cracks, dunting, or warping, crazed or uneven glaze) then we will not be held responsible for them.

If we underfire something, we’ll let you know and refire it for free. If it gets overfired by mistake, (this can happen if the thermocouple or elements malfunction) – we won’t charge you for that but the work is likely to be damaged.

If the kiln causes any damage, like a rare case of a stack collapse, we will refund your firing costs. But we won't be liable to replace any lost work.

And one last thing, if your work missing, that’s on you to pick it up on time.

Thanks for understanding!
