ABOUT ME

Hi - My name is Jacqui Louw and welcome to my ceramics studio.

What started as a hobby, has now become a full-time occupation for me.

I’m inspired by the art, chemistry and alchemy of ceramics : the transformation of earth, fire, and water into something fragile and enduring. I love the unpredictability, the richness of materials, techniques and creative possibilities of clay.

To me, handmade ceramic vessels are deeply intimate objects that nourish, sustain and bear witness to life's most personal moments. I explore form, colour, texture and symbolic meaning to express my sentiments about our relationship with the environment, gender and identity. My forms are simple, suggestive, asymmetrical and serpentine, reminiscent of our planet, Earth and the human body. Vibrant hues, complex layered textured glazes are central to my storytelling, expressing harmony and chaos.

With training in Australia, Denmark and Italy, I established OoPs – One-off Pottery Studio in 2019. Based in Hampton, I create, sell, teach, provide studio access and firing services. I also teach wheel-throwing and hand building at the Beaumaris Art Group and Brighton Recreation Centre.

This carousel explains my artistic statement about the two moon jars I have custom-made and am donating to raise funds for The Koala Kids Foundation on 7th February at the Melbourne Racing Club’s Annual Family Foundation’s online silent auction. 100% of the proceeds go to Koala Kids - a volunteer charity offering amazing support to children and young people undergoing cancer treatments in Victoria and Tasmania.

The handmade one-off porcelain moon jars are entitled “A Moment of Happiness” and “A Moment of Joy” - inspired by Koala Kids mission.

Glazing and firing two porcelain moon jars to be donated to The Koala Kids Foundation @koalakids. Koala Kids is one of 11 charities chosen to benefit from funds raised at Melbourne Racing Club’s Annual Family Foundation Day at Caulfield Race Course on Saturday 7 February, 2026. These one-off hand made moon jars will be offered for the online silent auction. Koala Kids will realise 100% of the proceeds of the auction items and a percentage of the raffle.

Koala Kids is a volunteer-driven charity working closely with the Children’s Cancer Centres at the Royal Children’s Hospital and Monash Children’s
Hospital, as well as Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and major regional hospitals across Victoria. They also support Royal Hobart Hospital.

These two large one-off porcelain moon jar vases I have made are inspired by Koala Kids’ mission to create “moments of happiness” for children and families undergoing cancer treatment in Victoria.

This womb-shaped vase embodies the intertwining of grief and healing after my mother’s young death from cancer. The missing fragment, rejoined elsewhere, signifies loss and enduring
connection. Its black interior holds my sorrow, while the pink, white and black exterior evokes tenderness, memory, and the gradual return of light.

Title: Woman Interrupted: Incision
This womb-shaped vessel, split and sutured with metal staples, personifies my body’s enduring dialogue with surgical intervention and repair. Pink and red evoke femininity and sacrifice; black suggests trauma and endurance; crawling white signifies sterility and healing. It speaks of pain, resilience and the perpetual reconstruction of women through surgery.

This vessel entitled “Bloodline” from my “Woman Interrupted” series symbolises the entwined essence of womb and heart, fusing creation and devotion. The red cracked glaze evokes passion, rupture, and resilience; its pink interior expresses tenderness and life within. Bloodline captures the essence of motherhood, the enduring connection from conception to my children’s eternal place in my heart.

Celebrating creativity on an intimate scale, this exhbition showcases both emerging and established artists from across Australia and beyond, with over 1100 artworks on display, each no larger than 35x35x35cm.

Every artistic medium imaginable is on display, including painting, photography, sculpture, drawing, printmaking, ceramics, weaving... and more! The Small Works Art Prize is celebrated for its inclusivity, energy, and community spirit, offering artists a unique platform to connect with collectors and curators, share their work with thousands of visitors, and be part of an immersive exhibition that proves small art can have a truly big impact.

Tactile brings together members of Valley Potters, a collective of ceramic artists from across Victoria, united by a shared passion for clay and the handmade. This exhibition celebrates the physical and sensory connection between hand, material, and form - offering a rich exploration of texture, surface, and touch.
From smooth porcelain to rough stoneware, each piece speaks to the intimacy of the maker’s process: a finger’s pressure, a tool’s mark, the trace of fire.
Tactile invites viewers to engage with the subtle language of clay and to reflect on our human instinct to connect through touch.
In a world increasingly shaped by the digital and intangible, these works offer a grounding, physical experience. Tactile is a celebration of clay’s enduring ability to speak through the body - raw, immediate, and deeply felt.

It’s a collection of ceramic pieces by many of my talented colleagues at Valley Potters members, some of whom I have tagged below. The pieces I have chosen form part of my “Oceans Interrupted” series inspired by my daily beach walks with my dog and my growing worry about climate change. The ocean is this wild mix of power and delicacy, and it reminds me every day how much it is affected by us. The forms in this series are simple and earthy, but the surfaces and colours are where I tell the real story. Layers of blues and greens echo ocean movement and depth; sharp blacks that hint at oil spills; and white crawling glazes that crack like melting ice caps. Taster of two of my pieces ready for the Oceans Interrupted Exhibition @the_window_bayside with @jwtjessicawatsonthorp opening 3rd May at 11am. Part of the @sandyecoexpo @sandy.village. Hope to see you there! Through my “Oceans, Interrupted” series, I invite viewers to consider the weight of human impact on our planet’s most vital and volatile element - the ocean. I use colour, texture and form to evoke the emotional and ecological tensions between humanity and the sea. I aim to prompt reflection on the delicate balance between nature’s power and its vulnerability.

Sold a good number of my pots at this Saturday’s Mansfield Pottery Festival. Thank you to @mansfield_pottery_festival for organising such a wonderful, friendly, well organised event. I’ll be back hopefully next year. I have been spending the past few years really working on my technique and my ‘voice’, which I feel is slowly beginning to emerge. I believe that handmade ceramic vessels are deeply intimate objects—that nourish, sustain, and bear witness to life’s most personal moments. I particularly love this moonjar shape as I find it lends itself well to what I’m trying to express. Colour is central to my storytelling, with vibrant hues conveying emotions and social themes. Totally thrilled that I will be sharing my stall at the Mansfield Pottery Festival @mansfield_pottery_festival on Saturday 8th March with an amazing and inspiring young American ceramic artist, Carson Culp @culppottery. I got to know Carson last year at La Meridiana Pottery School @meridianapotteryschool in Tuscany. I did a two-week porcelain wheel-throwing course there, where Carson was co-teaching with John Colbeck, in September 2024. Carson is visiting Australia as a resident artist at Montsalvat @montsalvatartscentre at the moment and was invited to be an international artist at the Warrandyte Pottery Festival @thepotteryexpo that was unfortunately cancelled because of the extreme fire danger that weekend. He will also be exhibiting two stunning pieces at the Poets of Pottery Exhibition at the Clay Stables as part of the Mansfield Pottery Festival. It opens on Friday night, 7th March from 6.30 to 8.30pm. Here are some pictures of Carson’s work that will be for sale on Saturday at my stall as well as pictures of my time with him here and at La Meridiana with wonderful group ofof women.
